YOUR MONEY: Charities sometime prey on the elderly, too

My mother-in-law is in her 80s, a "Rockefeller Republican" who is still politically and civically active whenever her health allows it. Recently, however, she spent eight days in the hospital. While she was away, the phone rang almost every night with calls from telemarketers hoping she’d help out some political or charitable cause. While my in-laws are on the national do-not-call registry, political and charitable groups are exempted; a long history of being active donors has made them targets for every group that has a copy of the mooch list.My mother-in-law still picks her causes carefully; she’s socially liberal but fiscally conservative — the definition of a Rockefeller Republican — and wants to continue making a difference. So imagine the surprise when her mail included a letter from Fidelis — a national organization that is the antithesis of her politics — saying that her December donation had failed to go through because the credit-card information was incorrect. The note sparked my curiosity because so many things about it seemed out of place.

Selebi to be charged within the week

A meeting of the NPA's top brass today will confirm the date, which will then be communicated to Selebi's legal team.

The extent of the case against the commissioner was revealed in court documents on Friday during his failed last-ditch attempt to try and prevent being prosecuted.

It's alleged Selebi's long-time friend, Glenn Agliotti, gave him money in exchange for favours.

Selebi took extended leave from his job as head of police in South Africa and has also stepped down as president of Interpol this weekend.

We won't be seeing handcuffs slapped on the commissioners wrists, instead he will present himself before a magistrate sometime this week to be officially charged.

Todays NPA meeting will likely deal with tactical issues about how to manage the fallout around the prosecution.

Anna Schwartz blames Fed for sub-prime crisis

She still works every day at the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York, where she has toiled since 1941.

Her fame comes from a joint opus with Nobel laureate Milton Friedman: A Monetary History of the United States. It revolutionised thinking on the causes of the Great Depression when published in 1965. The book blamed the Fed for causing the slump. The bank failed to use its full bag of tricks to stop the implosion of the money stock, and turned a bust into calamity by raising rates.

"The book was a bombshell," says British monetarist Tim Congdon. "Until then almost everybody thought the free-market system itself had failed in the 1930s. What Friedman-Schwartz say was that incompetent government bureaucrats at the Fed had caused the Depression."

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

Debit or credit? You can swipe your card now. No, the other way. No, the other way. I'll just punch it in over here. Do you have another card? My computer screen is frozen, can you wait? I need to start over. What's your phone number? What's your ZIP code?" Then after you've run the gantlet of questions, they tell you how much money you've saved. Of course, they don't add back the time you've spent being debriefed or watching them fumble around because they weren't properly trained or their computers were outdated or upgraded. None of this is the fault of clerks. They're just doing their jobs. The fault lies with managers who've decided to do inventory and marketing on your time -- Gary Crooks/Smart Bombs.

Racial Issues Boil Over In Democratic Campaign

Over the weekend, the issue of race surged to the forefront of the Democratic primary race. The New York Times reports Clinton and Obama "engaged in a war of words on Sunday over Mrs. Clinton's recent remark about the role that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. played in securing civil rights laws in the 1960s." The Time adds that in a conference call with supporters on Sunday, Obama "refuted the charge that his campaign had been trying to fan the flames of black voters and party leaders about Mrs. Clinton's comments involving Dr. King." Obama said, "Senator Clinton made an unfortunate remark, an ill-advised remark, about King and Lyndon Johnson. I didn't make the statement. I haven't remarked on it, and she, I think, offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King's role in bringing about the Civil Rights Act." The Washington Post adds Obama had "previously tried to sidestep direct engagement in the debate over race.
