Cut back on your credit cards

Do you ever feel like the statements and credit-card offers just keep coming? Consumer Reports' Money Adviser says cutting down on your credit cards is one of the simplest ways to streamline your financial life.

Most people only need one or two credit cards. If you carry an American Express or Discover card, you might want to consider adding a MasterCard or a Visa because they're more widely accepted. .

GM banking on a biofuel breakthrough

With oil prices hovering near $100 a barrel and gas prices expected to rise above $3.50 a gallon later this year, biofuel companies would seem to have a golden opportunity for growth. But to date, biofuels have been driven by government incentives and mandates rather than consumer demand, and 2007 exposed the limits of current technology.

While the ethanol industry hit a record output of 6.2 billion gallons, it also faced its first political backlash. Ranchers blamed the industry for boosting the price of corn to record levels and driving up food costs. Activists in many cities fought new or expanding plants over environmental concerns such as water use, air pollution and safety.

And despite pressure from Detroit automakers and the ethanol industry, growth in filling stations for E85 fuel remained sluggish: Roughly 1,400 stations out of about 170,000 nationwide offer it.

Juniper Networks exec to succeed Microsoft Business Division President ...

In what I consider surprising timing, Microsoft announced on January 10 that one of its three corporate presidents, Jeff Raikes, is retiring in September 2008.

Raikes will be succeeded by Stephen Elop, who until today was chief operating officer at Juniper Networks, according to a Microsoft statement. Elop will oversee the Microsoft Business Division, the group Raikes currently leads, which includes the Information Worker (Microsoft Office), Unified Communications and Microsoft Business Solutions (ERP/CRM) groups.

Why do I consider the announcement about Raikes surprising? If I were Microsoft, I wouldn't want a lot of churn during the year that Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates is discontinuing his day-to-day duties at the company as of July 1. hanging up his CSA hat and remaining Chairman only

(My mistake: Even though Gates still is quite involved in product/strategy decisions, he hasn't been Chief Software Architect on paper since 2006.
