Viewer Feedback On Mass Transit Bailout

(CBS) We wanted to know your thoughts on the state's plan to bail out mass transit in the Chicago area and Gov. Rod Blagojevich's proposal to allow seniors across the state to ride public buses and trains for free. Here's what you said: Thanks, but no thanks Gov. As a retired senior who rides CTA to Dr. appts etc. I think that we already get a good deal with the reduced senior fare. I don't want to be treated disrespecful by others, because we are riding for free, and it will happen.

--Alberta B.No wonder the CTA is in trouble, the news recently reported that a CTA bus driver could retire after 3 yrs. employment and receive medical coverage for the remainder of their life! This is a great, and unnecessary, expense to the taxpayers! Why are collar counties paying more of a tax increase than those people in Chicago and Cook county who are the ones using the services of the CTA? I haven't been in Chicago or used the Cook county transit system for several years, since I live outside of Cook county, I don't know why I'm paying for this service, you may as well tax the rest of the counties in Illinois, it makes just as much sense.

Universities face crunch in funding

Michigan public universities, already stretched thin after losing a huge monthly payment from the state this summer, may be on the brink of missing another if the government shuts down on Monday.

Without the money from their overdue August payment and from their regular October check, the universities' leaders say they may have to turn to students or loans to tide themselves over.

"The critical issue in the short term is whether or not we will see that August payment," said Cheryl Roland, spokeswoman for Western Michigan University. "And if it starts to look like the October payment was in jeopardy, too, it's just hard to comprehend how that could be managed."

Lake council gives initial OK to income tax

I do not know of one city or town in the Region that can handle the services the sheriff provides (e.g. jail, court, police to rural areas). By law the sheriff must proform these duties. I do not mind paying a tax. I make a pretty good living and do not mind paying my dues I am very blessed. The issue here is where the money is going. I think if one pays taxes in their community the monies from that tax should be spent in that community. Cities like Hammond, Gary, and East Chicago do not share their casino money (maybe becasue they mismanage it themselves) but we are still suppose to pay even more for their poor. NOT!!!! " .

Detention center program offers chance to hope, cope, learn

Baker takes a concept, finds a hands-on way to teach it and adjusts it for each student, more challenging for some, less for others.Learning the concepts is important, he says, but he measures success in other ways."When you see a kid who used to be so polarized against the world and he’s making statements where he’s leading others in the pod … does it mean they get on the outs and run for Senate? No."But once they get to that place where they open their mind, they can’t go back."Nancy Campbell calls it the Happy Circle. The class is designed to help students see themselves in a more positive light, to learn empathy. Each student takes a turn around the circle, saying something positive that’s happened that day. Their comments are framed by the realities of limited freedom and the looming presence of the justice system."I might get to go home today.""I got to eat a piece of chocolate.""I’m alive.""I went to court.""They lowered my bond."Then, Campbell spreads laminated cards on the floor and the students pick one that shows how they really feel.Sad.

New ID bill 'several years' away

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats both oppose the cards and say they would scrap them if they got into power.

But Mr Brown last week prompted talk of a rethink after a series of comments including telling an interviewer "there is no compulsion for British citizens".

'Pilot' scheme

Mr Byrne insisted that the government remained as enthusiastic as ever about the cards - which in the past he has said he believes will become a British "institution".

He said: "What we will see this year is the introduction of compulsory ID cards for foreign nationals who want to come and stay in Britain.

"By Christmas, we will be issuing those ID cards to foreign nationals.

Glenn Greenwald

The e-mail flood started out we caught you guys, we never did trust you. That kind of thing. I think it is a very interesting dynamic. I saw middle-aged women just throw their arms around Barack Obama, kiss him hard on the cheek and say, you know, I'm with you, good luck. And i think he feels it, too.Dana Milbank, The Washington Post:ABOARD THE STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS, Jan. 7

For the moment, at least, the John McCain of yore has returned. . . . Ladies and gentlemen, John McCain is back. Left for dead when his campaign ran out of cash last summer, he returned to his endless town hall meetings and freewheeling talks on his campaign bus . . . Revived along with McCain's spirits: A level of "straight talk" bordering on the masochistic. . . . Mac is Back . . . .

Perhaps as important, McCain has learned a small degree of restraint.
