Federal deficit possible, study says

We get that. There is no point in coming on and using your usual Rhetoric 101 trick of discrediting the source, the reporter, the paper, and anyone else in the partisan drivel supply chain. The source does that. Posted 14/01/08 at 10:02 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

State schools going ‘green’

If the school saves more than the company's fee, WVU gets to pocket the difference. The first phase of the project is complete on WVU's Evansdale campus. The entire campus will be covered in about five years.Fisher hopes a universal policy will be completed this spring that addresses sustainability efforts campus-wide. The movement has created demand for a new job at WVU: sustainability coordinator. The position is currently vacant, but Fisher says he's looking for someone to oversee the school's various green projects. The coordinator would create a framework for the campus' environmental impact, with a hand in academic areas, student affairs, facilities, transportation and parking. And there are ways that WVU has been ahead of the game. The university's PRT system transports more than 2 million students a year between the university's two campuses."We don't even have a bus fleet," Fisher said.

Getaways to Coddle New Mothers (or Just Inspire Some)

The unscientific survey found Las Vegas was the most popular destination. (So, what happens in Vegas sometimes comes home with you and wants to borrow the car years later.)

Dr. David Adamson, president of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, said vacations can help couples who are trying to conceive, if the trips help them relieve stress, communicate better and reconnect.

"There's no evidence that by going away it somehow intrinsically increases pregnancy rates," Dr. Adamson said. But, he added, "If it increases the frequency of intercourse, then it's probably helpful."

As the due date approaches, some couples find the need to get away together while they still can.

Since June, three W Hotels in New York City have been offering a "baby me" package for expectant parents.

Deal to make BofA No. 1 in mortgages

The Bank of America and Countrywide branch offices are seen in Pasadena, Calif., Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. A buyout of hobbled mortgage lender Countrywide Financial likely would be approved by regulators, analysts say, because otherwise the company could file for bankruptcy, further disrupting the market for home loans. .

Hendricks Sr. told reporters in a conference call.Hendricks shared his vision for the tribe after traveling to Nashville to hand deliver to the Bureau of Indian Affairs the tribe's application to place both the targeted casino site and some acreage in Mashpee into federal trust. Land in trust would be tax-exempt and subject to federal laws. In the application, Hendricks cites high unemployment, incomes below the poverty level, physical and mental health, and housing needs among the serious challenges the tribe faces.Gaming revenues would allow the tribe to provide affordable housing to its 1,500 members and assisted-living facilities for seniors, Hendricks said. Casino profits also would help fund cultural activities, youth training, and more educational opportunities to help "future generations to survive and prosper in the larger society"... Globe.

Anna Schwartz blames Fed for sub-prime crisis

She still works every day at the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York, where she has toiled since 1941.

Her fame comes from a joint opus with Nobel laureate Milton Friedman: A Monetary History of the United States. It revolutionised thinking on the causes of the Great Depression when published in 1965. The book blamed the Fed for causing the slump. The bank failed to use its full bag of tricks to stop the implosion of the money stock, and turned a bust into calamity by raising rates.

"The book was a bombshell," says British monetarist Tim Congdon. "Until then almost everybody thought the free-market system itself had failed in the 1930s. What Friedman-Schwartz say was that incompetent government bureaucrats at the Fed had caused the Depression."
