How fast does sea level rise once glaciers start retreating during a ...

Sea level rise averaged 1 meter (3.3 feet) per century after the last glacial maximum. There are over 100 sq km of land in Fraser Delta that are less than 1 meter above sea level. It is some of the highest priced land in BC, heavily built up for homes, industry, and commercial buildings.

Once it started it didn't stop until sea level had risen by 180 to 200 meters (600 to 660 feet).

During the 'melt water surge' Sea Level rise averaged 4 meters per century, for 500 years. That gives over 9 feet in a 70 year lifetime.

Water St. in St. John's was settled in the early 1500s. At 4 meters/century it would be 20 meters underwater by now.

We are at the tipping point for avoiding catastrophic climate change.

Deniers who claim sea level couldn't rise by 20 feet simply don't know what they are talking about, but that is an old story by now.

SFGate: Raiders Silver and Black Blog

The Raiders will have the No. 3 or No. 4 overall pick of April's draft, depending on the heads and tails of it all.

After a 4-12 season, the Raiders are tied with the Falcons after various tiebreakers, so a coin flip will decide who gets to go third or fourth. The coinflip should happen within a month, whether at the Senior Bowl or Scouting Combine.

The Chiefs were also 4-12, but they will draft behind the Raiders based on their record against common opponents.

This much is clear: the Raiders will be in position to draft a high-impact player, either to shore up a beleaguered defense or get quarterback JaMarcus Russell a playmaker he desperately needs.

One name to keep in mind: Virginia defensive end Chris Long, son of a certain Howie Long.

Ponderings from PapaBear

The NFL regular season has come to a close and the Cleveland Browns just missed making the playoffs. A few weeks ago it sure looked like they were in good shape as far as the post season was concerned, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Still, the Browns did register a victory over the San Francisco 49ers in their final game and there will be high hopes for this team entering the 2008 season. The Brownies finished with a 10-6 record, far exceeding expectations for this team entering 2007. This is the first time this franchise has reached a double digit win total since they re-entered the league in 1999. They provided many thrills for their die hard fans this season and belive me it was long overdue. I grew up in Cleveland and have been a life long Browns fan, so the following opinion might be a bit bias.
