Keep Sainsbury in your larder
It's that time of year again. Christmas is over and the streets of Britain are heaving with discarded conifers. After serving their purpose, they have finally lost their allure. Unloved, valueless and slowly rotting, homeowners are desperate to get shot of them. With so many to get rid of, a huge number will just be dumped. A bit like retail shares then. Last week witnessed one of the blackest days the retail sector has ever seen. Marks & Spencer's trading statement sparked a 20 per cent sell-off, dragging the rest of the sector down with it. The consensus view was that if M&S is finding 2008 hard, the rest of the industry must face an even bleaker struggle. .
Procter lauds India for "magnificent gesture"
The hearing of Hogg, scheduled for the evening, ended in a stunning manner when Indians dropped the charge despite believing in themselves that they had a sure winner on their hands. Hogg was accused by the Indians for abusing Indian captain and vice captain Anil Kumble and Mahendra Singh Dhoni on the fifth afternoon of the Sydney Test last week. Meanwhile, Hogg himself was relieved that the charge hadn't been pursued against him. "It's a kind gesture by the Indian team and it's much appreciated by myself and the Australian cricket team," said the spinner. The tourists hope this goodwill gesture will help them in the case of Harbhajan Singh whose appeal to overturn the three-match ban, for allegedly racially abusing Andrew Symonds, is still pending.
Autistic teen reported missing in Vancouver calls, returns home
Anthony K. Abruzzini, a 13-year-old described as mildly autistic, was reported missing by his parents this evening but was found hours later. Anthony phoned his parents about 10 p.m. from a local AM/PM store, where he was located by Clark County Sheriff's Office deputies, said Sgt. C. Rothenberger, a sheriff's spokesman. He was returned home safely. Anthony had last been seen about 9:30 a.m. at the Vancouver School of the Arts and Academics, the sheriff's office said. He did not attend any of his classes there today. His parents discovered a two-page note in which Anthony wrote that he met someone named "Frank" online and planned to live with and work for him. Nothing further was known about "Frank," Rothenberger said. Anthony's friends said that in the past month he had talked about going to Seaside, Ore., to start a new life.
Clementine Ford reveals her two no guilt, no shame abortions
I made my position on the matter fairly clear. I always have been and always will be pro-choice when it comes to abortion. Unsurprisingly, I received a few embittered emails over it. One reader asked if I'd like to come along and witness an abortion procedure. Apparently she/he can arrange this for me. (Funny, the last time I checked the hospital wasn't exactly a drive-in.) This part's my favourite though: "I have twins born at 24 weeks gestation and the thought I could have aborted my children is so abhorrent I feel ill every time I hear an ignorant feminazi like you stating people should have the legal right to murder their children. You are a total disgrace to the human race!" Me, a feminazi and a total disgrace to the human race? Must be Wednesday . . .

Hydrogen study fuels possibilities
One of the latest advances comes from the lab of Bruce Logan, who is also director of the Penn State center. An energetic, bearded fellow who drives a Toyota Prius hybrid but who usually walks more than a mile from home to school, Logan studies how to "make" hydrogen. It's the most plentiful element in the universe, but it is generally bonded to other elements such as carbon and (in the case of water) oxygen. So these molecules must be broken apart - a process that requires a fair amount of energy, especially in the case of splitting water. Not so good when the end goal is to make energy. For now, hydrogen is most often produced by using steam to "reform" natural gas - which consists mainly of methane, a hydrocarbon. But that's a fossil fuel, and the process releases heat-trapping greenhouse gases that are blamed for global warming.
